Celebrating in Style

In celebration of MASH Magazine’s 21st anniversary, join us as we revisit some of the most iconic 21st birthday looks from fashion icons. Marking this milestone in unforgettable style,  these outfits set trends, defined eras, and still resonate with the fashion world today.

Naomi Campbell (1991) – The iconic supermodel celebrated her 21st birthday in a black-and-white checkered bodycon dress, complemented by a jeweled statement necklace and bracelets. Queen of details, she added a frosted eyeshadow and full-glam finish to her extravagant look. A memorable night, the star-studded guest list included names like Madonna and Steven Meisdale and, as Elle magazine noted, a hula-hoop-sized cake characterized the night.

Paris Hilton (2002) – For her 21st, the hotel heiress wore a now-iconic Julien Macdonald silver chainmail mini dress with a plunging cowl neckline, open back, and thigh-high leg split. Styled with a thick silver choker and low-rise heels, Hilton established the ultimate Y2K party look. The look is still idolized today, with even Hilton herself recreating it for the 2023 Klarna & Paris Hilton House of Y2K launch party.

Selena Gomez (2013) – Gomez celebrated with family and friends at Bagatelle, a French restaurant in L.A., dressed in a stylish, monochromatic three-piece look. Her outfit featured a cream embellished crop top from Missguided and white quilted shorts from Topshop, completed with Alexander McQueen honeycomb strappy sandals.

Kendall Jenner (2016) – Drawing comparisons to the aforementioned look of Paris Hilton, Jenner opted for a custom LaBourjoisie sequin mini dress– a halter-style, barely-there design adorned with high slits, silver sequins and Swarovski crystals, valued at around $9,000. She added a touch of vintage glam with a fur stole, making this look edgy, timeless and bold. 

Gigi Hadid (2016) – Celebrating at the Intrigue nightclub in Vegas, Gigi brought a twist on the classic blazer in a copper and white satin backless mini dress with long sleeves. She paired the daring outfit with camel thigh-high suede pointed stiletto boots. Emphasizing her new legality, the night also featured a custom Snapchat geotag of her sitting in a martini glass (obviously) and ‘Gigi Hadid’ inscribed bottles. 

Bella Hadid (2017) – To kick off her big day, the younger Hadid sister wore a white eyelet corset dress from Australian brand Daisy for a lunch outing in NYC. Later, she made a complete style shift, donning a black, midi-length Dolce & Gabbana dress with lace-up sides running the dress’s full length, for dinner with family and friends.

Taylor Hill (2017) – During a weekend getaway to Vegas, surrounded by fellow Victoria’s Secret Angels, the model wore a sparkling black jumpsuit paired with a shimmering silver purse, beachy waves, and gold sandals for her celebration. The party featured live music by Calvin Harris and playful, larger-than-life cutouts of Taylor's face for guests to display as they celebrated.

Kylie Jenner (2018) – True to infamous Kardashian/Jenner style, the youngest sister of the clan sported not one, but two stunning looks for the night of her 21st. Kylie first appeared in a satin magenta cutout dress from Peter Dundas, paired with a slicked-back blonde ponytail and minimal accessories for an intimate dinner. Later, she turned heads in a strapless, blush-toned sparkling romper, embracing her Barbie-inspired theme. 

Lily Rose Depp (2020) – Amid the height of the pandemic, Depp proved that one could still have a glamorous 21st in lockdown. Quarantined with family in Paris, she shared photos to Instagram of her in a red cocktail dress with a halter-neck silhouette, polka-dot print and lace embellishments. Her look was finished with a simple ring and chunky gold hoops, epitomizing Gen Z chic.

Olivia Rodrigo (2024) – Known for her love of vintage fashion, the actress and musician wore a black, Grecian-inspired strappy dress from the 1991 Alïa spring collection. With a deep V-cut nearly reaching her navel, the dress was cinched with black leather belts at her bust and waist. Rodrigo celebrated with an intimate home birthday party, sharing photos of the event featuring friends like Tate McRae, Billie Eilish, and The Kid Laroi.
