“red is passion, red is power, red is conofidence”

In the world of rodeo, the color red isn't just a hue—it is a force. A symbol of power, intensity, and adrenaline that has dominated the sport for decades. From bold red cowboy boots to striking red fringe, red is not just a color; it’s woven into the fabric of rodeo culture and fashion.

Pro Rodeo is the heartbeat of American culture, born from the daring spirit of vaqueros in the 1800s, whose skill with rope and reins sparked a tradition of independence and adventure. What started as friendly rivalries between cowboys soon ignited into a thrilling sport, culminating in the creation of rodeo and the founding of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association, PCRA, in 1975.

The rodeo embodies the spirit of adventure and has long been symbolized by the color red. Just as the sport of rodeo has evolved with intense passion and energy, the color red has been linked to powerful emotions and cultural significance from the rodeo arena to social media trends. In fact, a red ribbon is awarded to competitors who earn second place or have a commendable performance, cementing red’s connection to the rodeo ethos. This ribbon represents the raw energy and drive for progress, reflecting the unrelenting pursuit of excellence in the sport.

The Red Color Theory phenomenon first surged on social media as a symbol for confidence and passion. The phenomenon is also seen with bulls, which, like humans, have had intense associations with the color red for thousands of years. Bull riders wear the Garibaldi shirt, a red wool garment popularized in 1860. A direct ancestor of the modern blouse, the Garibaldi shirt is often associated with rodeo culture for its bold, statement-making design.

Red within rodeo is the thread that ties the original and the contemporary in Western fashion and culture. Red increases attention and stimulates action, making it an ideal choice for promoting events that draw in large crowds and excite an audience.

The PCRA plays a vital role in the rodeo world, not just in organizing events but by championing the sport's culture and traditions. Known for its dedication to promoting the highest standards of rodeo competition, PCRA uses red in its logo and throughout its website as a powerful tool to connect with audiences. Red conveys the raw intensity and excitement of the rodeo. By incorporating red into their branding– on everything from logos to event banners– they tap into the emotional charge the color brings, sparking enthusiasm in potential attendees. This strategic use of red amplifies the sport’s thrilling atmosphere and generates buzz to drive ticket sales for upcoming events, making PCRA a force in keeping the rodeo spirit alive and thriving.

Western fashion has experienced a vibrant resurgence in recent years, making waves on pop culture stages and fashion runways alike. The growing presence of bold red in cowboy-inspired styles reflects a return to Americana, blending rugged Western elements with modern aesthetics. Key cultural influences like Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” era and the return of country music aesthetics have reignited this trend. Luxury designers are embracing  Western influences in their collections; Ralph Lauren’s Western Collection featuring a pair of cowboy boots in a rich burgundy hue incorporates the deep, earthy tones of red with traditional Western style. Combining red with classic Western staples has become a powerful statement, bridging the gap between traditional and modern styles. Fashion icons like Bella Hadid have also helped usher in a fresh, chic take on Western fashion, bringing red into the mainstream with cowboy boots, fringe, and statement leather pieces.

Red vetements have also made their appearance in fashion collections. The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, 2024 collection blends tradition with contemporary trends, showcasing staple pieces like red fringe, red leather, red cowboy boots, and red cowboy hats. Wrangler highlighted a striking red full-bodysuit coupled with a bold red cowboy hat and sparkly red boots on Instagram, perfectly fusing classic Western style with modern flair.

Red continues to be a key element in Western fashion, drawing from rodeo’s emphasis on the color while tying back to broader American cultural identity. Whether in the arena or on the runway, the color remains a bold statement of the spirit that defines Western culture. From its historical roots in the sport of rodeo to its modern resurgence on fashion runways, red is passion, red is power, and red is confidence.
